Installing Plucker and Sunrise

So you want to install Plucker for your Palm.  Most people would say good luck and here is the software.  I ain't like that so you will get something that you ain't expecting.

Just remember that this process can be somewhat frustrating for the new user.  Don't feel bad as I most likely will answer most of your questions somewhere in this article.

Plucker

Since Advantgo is no longer available for general usage, ie Mobile Gabriel, you have a choice now as to what you will load for your Palm Pilot.  Me? I choose Plucker for many different reasons but I will highlight only the top two.  First of all it works on my operating system which is Windows XP.  Second of all the price nothing.  It don't cost a thing to download and run on your XP system.  Once you get the program you can make a disk copy and load it on almost any computer you have access to.

How to install Plucker.

 1. You could go to http://www.plkr.org and search for the download page.  Works for me and it gets you the latest version.

 2. Run the setup program which is an .exe not a bit torrent extension.  If you made the mistake of doing a bit torrent download then you might have the possibility of getting the right program or not.  It depends on the torrent program down load manager.  Save yourself quite a few hassles and use the .exe download and you will be able to run the program right out of the box.

 3. Now the fun part begins.  Plucker will handle all kinds of downloads for the Palm.  That is great except for the fact that Plucker always redownloads the whole page instead of updating the page.  If there are no changes then why waste the time doing the page over?  You can use Plucker to download Mobile Gabriel straight out of the box.  Here is how you do it.

 4.  Start the desktop.  It will come up in a cute little rectangle.  Click on file Add a new channel wizard.  This will bring up a title page for the new channel.  Name it Mobile Gabriel. Click next.

 5. The next page gives you the starting address or URL for the page you are retrieving.  Enterhttp://www.mobilegabriel.com  Click on next.

 6. The next page is configure Channel Page.  Here is where the joy of programming comes in.  The first tab is the homepage that you are downloading. Ignore it as it should be filled in already.  The Second ta is Spidering tab unless you are real good don't mess with it.  The Third tab is called Limits.  This is the first one to mess with.  It is here you will set the depth of the retrieval.  I personally set it to 5 pages deep.  Remember the more you add the longer it takes to download.  If you set it to one you only get the top page and nothing below.  You want to at least get to the readings on Mobile Gabriel.  This is why I set it to 5 deep. Don't set any other limits. Formatting tab is fourth set anything you like there.  Most of the time I leave it blank due to the fact that if it ain't broke don't fix it. The fifth tab is Images.  Here you can pick up pictures or not I choose not to. The sixth one is Output Options.  As you read down the page you can find all kinds of choices I leave the originals in place.  The seventh tab is destination.  Here you choose who is going to get this file when you are done making it.  Make sure you are chosen and your handheld is listed. The eighth tab is Scheduling.  Here is where you select how often Mobile Gabriel gets retrieved.  The choices are hourly, daily, weekly, monthly or yearly.  My choice is weekly some folks might want daily.  Your call.  Then you click on ok.  This returns you to the desktop and you can start updating right on the spot.

Now you have a problem.  You want to not continuously re download the same page each time you do an update.  After all your time is valuable and it takes a long time to make the download complete. 8 to 14 hours depending on how you connect to the web.  If you want to make a phone call better use your cell as the internet connection is going to tie up the phone line.  What to do? Most of us use some form of DSL or T rated connection that's fine and good but those with a phone only connection don't have the luxury of a direct connection.

There is a program called Sunrise XP.  This program while similar to Plucker is different.  It will only update the pages that have changed.  Yes you go through the same steps as when you created Mobile Gabriel on plucker but no you will not continually re download everything there.  For example how often does the face page change?  Whenever the Good Father decides to do so.  Maybe once a year or less.  Depending on the Operating system you have you have a choice of Downloads for this program.

For windows XP and earlier users you need to find Sunrise XP 2.03.  I know the site says 2.04 works in XP but you will get a lot of error messages before you find out that you need the earlier version. Save your self a lot of grief and go to http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=22903  and pick up the second answer it is called What version. It is there you will find the downloadable .zip file. This is for XP and earlier only do not use on Vista.  If you don't have a cheap .zip program check out 7zip at http://www.7zip.com.

For Vista and Later Windows use 2.04.  This can be found at http://sunrise.mobileread.com Current version is for Windows Vista and Later. If you use it on XP you will get all kinds of error messages to include table21.dll is missing. Sync20.dll is missing.
